Top 10 Things to Do to Get in the Christmas MoodDecember 3, 2018
There are plenty of Christmas traditions shared by many across England, and indeed the wider world: from exchanging gifts, to decorating Christmas trees, to lighting candles. Traditions also vary a lot between families up and down the country. With that in mind, here are some of my family’s own Christmas traditions…
Buying the Christmas turkey weeks in advance (as well as a ‘spare turkey’, in case of emergency)
Writing and sending Christmas cards to all your family and friends
Buying a chocolate advent calendar (or making your own) so you can open a different section for each day in December counting down to 25th
Engaging in a family discussion about which Christmas advert is our favourite this year (and the John Lewis advert never fails to get a mention)
Watching the Queen’s speech at 3 o’clock on Christmas Day
Buying a Christmas edition TV guide magazine and circling all the programmes you want to watch over the festive season to make sure you don’t miss anything!
Visiting the nearest city’s Christmas markets to make the most of the festive cheer (shout out to the Manchester Christmas Markets and Nottingham’s Winter Wonderland)
Pulling Christmas crackers across the dinner table before tucking into Christmas Dinner and laughing at all the bad jokes written inside them
Attending a carol service with the local schools and brass band
10. Making endless paper chains to hang all around the house
11. Leaving empty stockings over the fireplace on the night of 24th December and running downstairs on Christmas morning to see what presents have appeared for you!
12. Going into the attic to resurrect all the board games you used to play as a child
