Living like a Local in Nottingham
Nottingham is a city full of opportunities for everyone! Its international and diverse vibes make it easy for all new residents to feel welcome. But even if you’re here for a limited time, you can still live like a local with tips from Mr. Nottsman.
Born and bred in the city of Robin Hood, he now is a Photographer for multiple venues and events. We sat down with him and had a chat about his favourite places to go and things to do, so you can experience Notts like a true local!
Places to go
Hockley Arts Club
Although the Hockley Arts Club is a bit hard to find, it is no secret amongst Nottingham’s students and locals anymore. So, if you fancy having a first-class drink and admire the artistic floral interior design.
Probably one of Nottingham’s most secretive venues; the Boilermaker. Don’t be intimidated by the scary doorman, because once you’re past him, you will enter cocktail heaven! Next to drinks like “Bloody Millennial Mary” or “Gindependant Woman”, they also serve non-alcoholic beverages. But no matter what you order, it will always come with a dash of sarcasm and a spoonful of surprise.
The name is pretty self-explanatory. The concept however, is not. Milkshake shop by day – with up to 70 different variations of the beloved treat – and Bar by night!! Yes people, you read correctly; a crazy idea like this is definitely worth checking out!
Things to do
Go for a stroll through Wollaton or Highfields Park
It’s the perfect thing to do when you need a break from studying (if it’s not raining cats and dogs). Stretch your legs, enjoy the fresh air and forget about your study-worries. If you want to be even more active, why not rent a canoe in Highfields Park and paddle on the lake in summer?
Street Art, varieties of food, different kinds of shops and workshops – that’s Sneinton Market. A place where everyone is welcome, where there is lots to see, do and taste. Just a short you smell walk away from the city centre.
If the budget fits…
Calling all the gamers… and those who are looking for a bit of an extra thrill! The guys from Zero Latency have some special virtual reality games in store for you. Whether you want to fight Zombies or defend your spaceship – step into this alternate dimension and be a part of the game!
Logiclock and Escapeologic both offer different varieties of escape experiences. If you watched our Insta story carefully, you saw the Citylife Team escaping from the tight grip of the Italian Mafia and wild Pirates. For the extra kick (especially around Halloween), themes like “Howitz” or “Butcher” might be just the thing for you. Good luck escaping guys!
Always a fun thing to do! Quasar Elite offers many deals suiting your personal budget. Gather a group of friends (or random strangers), team up and feel like the spy you always wanted to be as a kid.
Speaking of kids, do you miss the time when you could jump on a bouncing castle without people staring at you thinking “what the heck is that 20-something year old doing there”? Does that scenario seem familiar? Then the Inflatology session for 18+ year olds is just the right thing to awaken your inner child.
One of the biggest events north of the city centre: The annual Bonfire Night on The Forest Recreation Ground, including loads of food stalls, rides and three highlights…literally! The first firework display will be at 7:15pm, followed by the lighting of the massive bonfire at 7:45. At 9pm there will be a second fireworks show, so don’t worry if you missed the first one.
Nottingham’s very own Winter Wonderland
Starting from 15th November, Old Market Square will be transformed into a snowy, Christmassy place of joy. An Ice Skating Rink, a Christmas Market, the scent of hot food and Gluhwein, all the lights and of course the giant Christmas tree will put you into a holiday mood.
As Mr. Nottsman said, there is always something going on for everybody and everything is close by here in Nottingham. Be sure to make the most out of the time you will spend in this exceptional city in the Midlands. Live like a local, feel like a local.
